Fridah Khalo’s Clothing Now On Display @ The Museo Frida Khalo in Mexico

x20130108-134038.jpg.pagespeed.ic.e9R2E7ycEE

The amazingly talented, tormented, and true to self Frida Khalo was and is a beacon for artists and activists alike. Her powerful self portraits and unflinching honesty are what attracts people to her work the most. She was a survivor of Polio and a terrible accident, both of which contributed to her bold fashion choices- large skirts and an “au natural” unibrow that she refused to pluck ( as an indirect result of being bedridden an alone, left to examine and accept her beauty and also hide her disfigurement with skirts). Her art has truly left a large mark on society, and her fashion choices were always a topic for discussion.

Once she died, her husband and later a close friend both kept her clothing locked away, most likely to preserve them. Fortunately for the adoring public, these items are now on display at the Museo Frida Khalo in Mexico for a short time. We would LOVE to be able to browse her collection of floral pieces, Mexican folk dresses and undoubtedly amazing accessories.

Schiaparelli Spring Couture Show: Our Favorites!

_ARC0137.450x675

Oh, happy day. Not only is it MLK Day ( a day of huge importance that in no way is being played down by this post), but it’s also the first day of the Paris Couture shows. Starting today, we can enjoy a glorious 7 days of amazing, hand made pieces stomping the Parisian runways and providing countless hours of inspiration and envy.

Elsa Schiaparelli, aka the surrealist designer, Salvador Dali collaborator, and creator of “Shocking Pink” was known for creating awe inspiring, crazy pieces with bright colors and even a suggestively placed lobster. Now, after 60 years out of the Couture show circuit, designer Marco Zanini showed his (gasp, first ever) haute couture show to a crowd of who’s who, like Jean Paul Gaultier, and the response was resoundingly positive.

We are ALL ABOUT hand made goodness, so the Couture Shows are like our candy store of sorts. Every single piece that walked the runway was made by hand (no machines at all!) in the ‘Place Vendôme premises, the same spot where Schiaparelli held her crazy and dramatic “Circus” show in 1938.’ (NYT) Not to mention the amazing and weirdly wearable hats by milliner Stephen Jones and jewelry by the french designer Gripoix. Everything worked perfectly. Check out some of our favorite looks!

Menswear Trends We’re Loving!

Canali’s luxe layers of velvet and fur

We here at Cecilia Gonzales Jewelry really do love a good suit. There’s something about a well dressed man that makes us a little happy inside. With all the baggy clothes and crazy fads (some of which are cool and deserve their own shine), it’s refreshing when Men’s Fashion Week rolls around and puts a nice polish on things. We also are quite partial to men’s jewelry. Seeing the new shows always breathes new life into our men’s and unisex designs. This year is no exception.

A few details have been standing out to us- Fur, Velvet, and the updated Slim Suit silhouette. Considering it’s the Spring Shows, pretty much everywhere except for Miami is still expecting cold months. So, lush layers of soft velvet and warm fur are welcomed. The Slim Suit will never go away, which is good, so it’s cool to see new takes on the style, such as Fendi’s galaxy-eque print and Marni’s slouchy fit. See our favorites so far below.

Mario Testino Displays His Photos of Beautiful Native Peruvian Clothing

Screen shot 2013-11-21 at 4.46.13 PM

Famed photographer Mario Testino took a different turn with his highly acclaimed work to capture the breathtakingly colorful clothing of Native Peruvians of the mountainous region of Cusco. His exhibit is called “Alta Moda” or High Fashion in Spanish. The fabulous photos will be on display at the Queen Sophia Spanish Institute in New York until March 29th, 2014. The images are vivid and truly inspirational. The color and texture, along with musical and cultural elements really set these photos apart from lots of mainstream fashion photography.

Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, under the chairmanship of Oscar de la Renta, is the first American venue to present ALTA MODA, a series of photographic portraits by acclaimed photographer Mario Testino. Known primarily for his work in fashion magazines, Testino makes a bold departure with this series. Alta Moda—literally “high fashion” in Spanish—documents Peruvians in their vibrantly colored and ornately adorned traditional and festive dress from Cusco, one of the highest mountainous regions of Peru. ALTA MODA by Mario Testino is accompanied by a series of related public programs that will additionally serve to reinforce the Institute’s mission of promoting greater awareness and understanding of the culture of Spain in the United States through a steadfast dedication to advancing scholarship in the humanities and the arts. Please check the website www.qssi.org for a schedule of events.

So, if you happen to be in the city during the next 4 months, take a day to mosey on over to the exhibit. For now, check out some of the photos below!

A Little Monday Inspiration

tumblr_msvdbvf1Wn1s4yngxo1_500

Considering that its Monday, and many of us are currently sitting at our desks, and maybe some are toiling away at a job that doesn’t really let them spread their creative wings, we figured there’s no better time for an inspiration post! Wether you are a designer, accountant, or a stay at home mom, there’s always room for some motivational images to jog the artist in you.

It’s that transitional time of year where the leaves are soon going to change colors and the weather will drop in temperature (yes, even in Miami!) New York Fashion Week has swept in like a whirlwind which means it’s time to darken those color palettes and gear up for the end of the year (while designers prepare for Spring.)  We here at Cecilia Gonzales are fully prepared, with an amazing line of gorgeous jewelry to complement any cool-weather ensemble. Check out some of the earrings HERE, on sale for a “secret” limited sale, just in time to stock up.

Here are some beautiful people, interesting photos and intriguing design/outfits that get our gears moving. We hope they inspire you as well!

Happy Weekend- Breezy Looks For Your Off Days

photo

It’s Friday! That magical day of the week that everyone looks forward to. We may be at work now, but later we will be free- free to relax at home, go out for a night on the town,  take all Saturday to tan on the beach, or to lazily stroll into brunch sunday afternoon. We work all week- so we deserve the weekend. What else do we all deserve for working so hard? Jewelry!

We’ve put together a few looks perfect for any weekend. There’s the Friday “I’m at work now but will definitely go out later” look, the Saturday beach-y look and of course a pretty Brunch dress.

Wearing a comfy T-shirt and denim shorts? Pile on the bangles and chain wrap bracelets, tie on an ultra-long necklace, and really dress up your day look with some dainty gold earrings! Don’t be afraid of over accessorizing- the dressed down outfit balances out the amount of jewelry.

DSC03871Wether you’re heading to the beach, taking a trip to the park or having lunch with the girls, a flowy wrap skirt, a light tank, a couple gorgeous necklaces (and comfy shoes!) are all you need to dress up your Saturday of leisure.

Sundays were made for brunching. The late morning/early afternoon meal is best enjoyed with mimosas, good friends and of course an eye catching statement necklace to make those friends just a little jealous! Pair with some sparkling stud earrings for an effortlessly chic look. Sundays never looked so good.

Miami Inspiration – Artist Eleazar Delgado

Miami artist Eleazar Delgado’s studio and gallery is one of the few cool places in Miami that has the energy to get inspired; his paints are full of vibrant colors and history.

His use of bold, bright colors and geometric patterns brings to life the indigenous plants, animals, landmarks and the Miami visionaries who saw beyond the wilderness.

Love these images of young Brigitte Bardot, the expression and the attitude are powerful (I wonder what she’s thinking). These fabulous celebrity pictures from the past make it easy to get inspired and come up with the next cool jewelry piece.
